Belief in Allah — The Greatest Pillar
Lesson 1 of 5 · Level 3: The Six Pillars of Faith · 3 min read
هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ
Huwa-llahulladhi la ilaha illa huw
He is Allah, besides Whom there is no god.
Explanation
Islam describes faith — iman in Arabic — as resting on six pillars of belief: belief in Allah, His angels, His revealed books, His messengers, the Last Day, and the divine decree. This level walks through them all, and it begins with the first and greatest: belief in Allah Himself.
Here is something that surprises many people: simply believing God exists is not the finish line — it is barely the starting line. The Quran tells us that the idol-worshippers of Makkah, if asked who created the heavens and the earth, would readily answer "Allah." They believed He existed; their error was giving His rights to others. True belief in Allah means three things held together: that He alone is the Lord — Creator, Owner, and Sustainer of everything; that He alone deserves worship, with no rivals and no intermediaries receiving prayer; and that His names and attributes are perfectly and uniquely His. He is Al-Hayy, the Ever-Living, who never dies and never sleeps. Al-Qayyum, the Self-Sustaining, who upholds all things while needing nothing. Ar-Rahman, the All-Merciful, whose mercy reaches every creature that has ever drawn breath — including you, in every breath.
If you want the entire theology of who Allah is in the smallest possible space, the Quran gives it in the four short verses of Surah Al-Ikhlas: "Say: He is Allah, the One; Allah, the Eternal Refuge; He neither begets nor is born; and there is none comparable to Him." The Prophet ﷺ said this small surah is equivalent to one-third of the Quran (Bukhari 5015). Learn it — perhaps even tonight. Millions of Muslims learned it as their very first surah, and it holds a lifetime of knowing Him.
Scholar Note
The Prophet described Surah Al-Ikhlas as equivalent to one-third of the Quran. (Sahih Bukhari 5015) Reciting it with understanding three times equals a complete recitation of the Quran in reward.
