Belief in Angels and the Divine Books

Lesson 2 of 5 · Level 3: The Six Pillars of Faith · 3 min read

وَلَكِنَّ الْبِرَّ مَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالْكِتَابِ

Wa laakinnal-birra man amana billahi wal-yawmil-aakhiri wal-mala-ikati wal-kitab

But true righteousness is believing in Allah, the Last Day, the Angels, and the Book.

Explanation

The second and third pillars of iman (faith) open your eyes to a far larger world: belief in Allah's angels, and belief in His revealed books. The angels are real beings, created by Allah from light, as the Prophet ﷺ taught: "The angels were created from light, the jinn from smokeless fire, and Adam from what has been described to you" (Muslim 2996). They do not eat, do not tire, and never disobey; their entire existence is devotion. Some you should know by name. Jibreel (Gabriel) carried Allah's revelation to the prophets. Mika'il is entrusted with provision and rain. Israfil will sound the Trumpet when this world ends. And two angels are assigned to you personally — the noble scribes — recording every deed, right now, as you read this. The believer who absorbs this never feels truly alone, and never feels unseen: the kindness you did in secret was witnessed, written, and kept. Belief in the books means believing that Allah did not leave humanity guessing. Again and again He sent guidance as revelation: the Tawrah (Torah) given to Musa, the Zabur (Psalms) given to Dawud, the Injil (Gospel) given to Isa, and finally the Quran given to Muhammad ﷺ. A Muslim honours every one of these as truly sent by Allah. But the earlier scriptures were altered and partially lost over the centuries — while the Quran stands apart, because Allah took its protection upon Himself: "Indeed, it is We who sent down the message, and indeed, We will be its guardian" (Quran 15:9). Fourteen centuries later, the Quran in your hands is the Quran the Prophet ﷺ recited — letter for letter, carried in the memory of millions. Your connection to your Creator's words is unbroken.

Scholar Note

The Prophet said: The angels were created from light, the jinn from smokeless fire, and Adam from what has been described to you. (Sahih Muslim 2996)

Reflect

You are surrounded by angels right now. How does that awareness change how you carry yourself through this day?
